The Genetics and Public Policy Center at Johns Hopkins University was designed to help key decision-makers respond to the challenges arising from scientific advances in the field of reproductive genetics and from genetic testing in general. The Center helped policy leaders, decision makers, and the public better understand and respond to the challenges and opportunities arising from advances in genetics and their application to human health and well-being.
As scientists unravel the human genome, they provide a clearer picture of the role genes play in health and disease. In turn, this new understanding is driving the development of new diagnostic tools and treatments. The Genetics and Public Policy Center helped policy leaders, decision makers and the public grasp the ethical, legal and social concerns raised by this important and rapidly evolving field and its application to health care.
The center was established in 2002 with financial support from Pew to serve as an independent and objective source of reliable information on genetic technologies. Its mission included educating the public, opinion leaders, policy makers and key stakeholders; publishing public opinion research; and advancing policy options for compelling issues in the field of reproductive genetics and genetic testing.
