Policy Briefing on Antibiotic Use in Food Animal Production

On April 16, more than 50 moms, dads and other caregivers will participate in the second annual Supermoms Against Superbugs Advocacy Day. These doctors, chefs, farmers, and survivors of drug-resistant and foodborne infections will share their experiences to help shine a light on the need to end the overuse and misuse of antibiotics in food animal production.

Panelists include:

  • Everly Macario (Illinois), Supermom spokeswoman who lost her son to a drugresistant infection nine years ago;
  • Danielle Wadsworth (Maine), who was infected with drug-resistant Salmonella after eating tainted meat;
  • Amanda Hedin (Minnesota), a mother of a premature baby who can testify to the value of antibiotics;
  • Jason Newland (Missouri), a pediatrician who treated two victims of drug-resistant infections that they acquired from contaminated soil during the 2011 Joplin tornado; and
  • Will Harris (Georgia), a farmer who raises beef and chicken without antibiotics.

The briefing is in cooperation with Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), Senator Susan Collins (R-ME), Representative Louise Slaughter (D-NY), and Representative Henry Waxman (D-CA).
